Your pet's teeth and gums are important to their overall health. Since our pets cannot brush and floss their own teeth, periodontal disease is the most commonly diagnosed problem in companion animals. Untreated dental disease can not only cause pain, but can lead to heart, kidney and other organ diseases. During the physical exam, we look for signs of oral and dental disease. However a more detailed and thorough examination can be performed under anesthesia. Officially this is called the Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT), but is typically called a dental. During the COHAT we will be able to exaimine and probe the teeth and gingiva (gums) for problems areas, take dental radiographs, and clean your pet's teeth. Blackhawk Veterinary Hospital is one of the only veterinary hospitals in the area to provide intra-oral dental x-ray technology; just like your dentist. This provides a valuable tool to diagnose dental disease below the gum line. We will also assist you in planning preventive dental home care for your pet.
